Netflix subscribers outside the U.S. have propelled Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 to the #8 position on the streamer’s global Top 10 chart, four years after the Yellowstone prequel first premiered.
The series has maintained its position in Netflix’s international Top 10 for two consecutive weeks, generating 2.6 million views in the past week alone. U.S. viewers still require a Paramount+ subscription to access the series.
1883 serves as the origin story for the Dutton family dynasty central to the Yellowstone universe. The prequel follows James and Margaret Dutton (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) as they lead their family on a perilous westward journey through the American frontier.
Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) co-stars as Shea Brennan, a hardened Civil War veteran who guides the wagon train through the unforgiving landscape that will eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch.
Critics have embraced the limited series, which holds an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers particularly praised the show’s cinematic quality and emotional storytelling approach.
The prequel’s international streaming success demonstrates the continued global appeal of Sheridan’s expanding television universe, even as the original Yellowstone series prepares to conclude its run later this year.
1883 represents the first of several Yellowstone spinoffs created by Sheridan, with 1923 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren currently streaming on Paramount+, and additional prequels in development.
