Netflix is gearing up for what star Alan Ritchson calls a “monster” hit with its upcoming sci-fi action thriller War Machine, directed by Patrick Hughes.
The film stars Ritchson (Prime Video’s Reacher) alongside Dennis Quaid, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales in a high-stakes battle against an extraterrestrial threat. Principal photography began in September 2024 across Victoria, Australia, including the RAAF Base at Laverton and Docklands Studios.
War Machine follows a group of elite recruits at a special operations boot camp forced to confront a deadly alien force, blending futuristic warfare with intense action sequences.
While no official release date has been announced, the film is expected to premiere on the streaming platform later this year.
Ritchson has set expectations remarkably high for the project. “War Machine for Netflix [is coming soon.] I think, and you heard it here first, [it’s] probably gonna be the b- no, not probably. [It’s] gonna be the biggest movie that Netflix has ever had,” the actor stated in a recent interview. “This movie is gonna be a monster. This is the coolest thing they’ve ever made, guaranteed.”
His bold claims come at a crucial time for Netflix, which has struggled to deliver critically acclaimed original films despite substantial investments.
Recent high-profile releases like The Electric State have underperformed with both critics and viewers despite impressive talent rosters and considerable production budgets. The platform has faced persistent criticism regarding the quality of its original film content — even when attaching major stars to projects.
War Machine is not to be confused with the 2017 Netflix film of the same name starring Brad Pitt.
