Netflix will discontinue support for Amazon’s first-generation Fire TV streaming devices beginning June 3, permanently cutting off access to the world’s largest premium streaming service on these older models.
The streaming giant has reportedly begun notifying affected subscribers via email, though no official announcement has been made public. The decision impacts three specific device models that are between 8-11 years old.
Devices losing Netflix compatibility include:
- Fire TV (2014)
- Fire TV Stick (2014)
- Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote (2016)
The move likely stems from Netflix’s adoption of newer technical standards, including the AV1 codec for high-quality video compression. These aging devices lack the capability to process newer streaming technologies efficiently.
While the decision affects relatively few users given the age of these devices, some consumers have continued using their original Fire TV hardware despite its limitations. Those users will now face a choice between upgrading their hardware or losing access to Netflix’s content library.
According to PC World, which first reported the news via German publication PC-WELT, Amazon may offer trade-in discounts for users looking to upgrade from these older models to current Fire TV devices.
This development follows an industry pattern of streaming services gradually phasing out support for first-generation hardware as technical requirements evolve.
