Netflix added the complete series of Mom to its streaming library this week, bringing all eight seasons of the long-running CBS sitcom to subscribers.
The Chuck Lorre-created series aired on CBS from 2013 to 2021, spanning 170 episodes across its eight-season run. Mom stars Anna Faris (Scary Movie) as Christy Plunkett, a single mother and recovering addict who relocates to Napa, California. Allison Janney (The West Wing) co-stars as Bonnie, Christy’s estranged mother who also struggles with addiction.
The series follows the newly sober Christy as she reconnects with her mother while navigating recovery and family relationships.
Co-creators Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker developed the series alongside Lorre. The regular cast includes Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl), Beth Hall, William Fichtner (Prison Break), Sadie Calvano, Blake Garrett Rosenthal, French Stewart (3rd Rock from the Sun), Nate Corddry, Kristen Johnston, and Matt Jones.
Several high-profile actors appeared in recurring roles throughout the series’ run, including Octavia Spencer, Kevin Pollak, Emily Osment (Hannah Montana), and David Krumholtz (Numb3rs).
Mom distinguished itself from typical network sitcoms by addressing serious subject matter including alcoholism, drug addiction, cancer, and homelessness. Despite its traditional multi-camera format, the series balanced these difficult topics with humor throughout its nearly 200-episode run.
“Unlike so many comedies on the air right now, it captures an air of desperation — of people who barely have enough trying to find ways to scrape by,” Vox noted in a 2014 review. “That was already evident in season one, but in season two, that has become the show’s mission statement.”
The series’ eight-season run makes it significantly longer than any original series Netflix has produced. The addition continues Netflix’s strategy of acquiring completed broadcast series that appeal to viewers seeking extended viewing experiences.
Mom is now available for streaming on Netflix.
